The rainforests are disappearing fast. Right? And you would like to see one before it is too late. You don't need to travel half the globe around to Brazil to see rainforests. You can see some of the most exotic and pristine rainforests in Mulu.
"This place Mulu, does it share a common border with South Afirca?"
Not really. Mulu only shares rhyming alphabets with Zululand. Mulu National Park is in Borneo.
"And where in the world is Borneo?"
Well, if you wonder where Borneo is, there are many others too, who do.
"Borneo is the best-kept tourist secret"
Commented a veteran Australian tourist, who discovered Borneo after several decades of Latin America, Africa and Asia. Surprisingly for an Australian, Borneo was just next doors! Borneo is the third largest island in the world, only behind Greenland and New Guinea. Politically, the states of Sabah and Sarawak are Malysian, with the independent Sultanate of Brunei sandwiched in between. A much larger portion of the island, called Kalimantan, is Indonesian. Much of Malaysian Borneo offers excellent tourist facilities. It is a 21/2 hours flight from Kuala Lumpur. There are regular Air Asia flights from KL.
Swinging orangutans, long-nosed proboscis monkeys, massive yellow beaked hornbills, carnivorous pitcher plants, endless stretches of untouched rainforests, towering mountains and massive cave chambers (including Sarawak Chamber, the largest in the world that can hold 38 football fields) make Borneo one of the last few destinations for adventure and eco-tourism. It boasts of the largest flower in the world - Raffleasia, all of 1.6 metre in diameter. Every evening, a breathtaking shaft of smoke (sans fire) spirals up from the Caves into the azure skies, a natural wonder that renders tourists spellbound. large patches of forest still remain uncharted.
Come, watch the human skulls hanging in the Iban houses. Swim out of underground cave rivers. Taste soup made of cave birds' nests. Marvel the rivers of red criss-crossing the Headhunters' Trail. Trek up 1700 metres to view the majestic 50 metre tall Pinnacle rocks- a 'must see before you die' per Lonely Planet. Digitise the carnivorous pitcher plants that actually digest insects.
Borneo has something for everyone in the family. If you want to take it light, you have the World's longest canopy walk over the rainforest, Show Caves visits, wildlife photography, unique and exotic flora and fauna, and just pristine pleasure, light years away from plastic and pollution.
But if you are itching for adventure, do jungle trekking, caving, summit ascent, rock climbing, white water rafting, mountain biking.
And if you find Borneo mysterious and adventurous, its history is equally romantic.
